Ionic Cooling in the Future

Cooling your computer using a water-based solution is not the best way to do it anymore. A new technology of cooling has appeared. It will increase the cooling abilities of usual fans very much. As computers' powers grow more and more heat is generated by its chips and we need gadgets to deal with that heat. The scientists believe that wind engines that create a "breeze" of charged particles (ions) will be able to keep the chips cool.

After the research the scientists have discovered that airflow cooling fans are not very effective because of the problems in air flow. Even when the fan blows the air to a chip, the nearest molecules to the chip tend to stay at the surface of it, which makes cooling effect much smaller.

The new technology created by the scientists is going a different way by shifting the charged particles from one end of the chip to the other. The experimental wind engine charges up particles and sends them over the chip, they are being attracted to negatively charged wires and this will make the molecules of air to constantly move improving cooling abilities. With introduction of ions in cooling technology there will be no need for water cooled solutions.

Professor Suresh Garimella gave the numbers about the improvement of the cooling abilities on computer chips. Their new gadget will improve cooling powers by 250% which basically means a 2.5 times increase in cooling. I wish I had something like that because my cooler sometimes goes to a 5 thousand RPM and gets really loud. By the way any other enhancements that you can do to your computer will increase cooling power by 40-50% (1.4-1.5 times). Just so you can compare how effective the new technology will be.

The last thing research team needs to do is to shrink their device to the size that can be used in the computers. That means that they have to shrink it a hundred times, and that will be a very big challenge for them. As for the rest of the device it is fully functional and we will have to wait another three years or so until hits the market.

Today is the era of optical data carriers. Floppy discs and other magnetic carriers are forced out by USB flash drives, compact discs, DVD and even Blu Ray. But there is one part of your computer that always remains magnetic. It is your Hard Disc. There are many pluses in its magnetic origin, i.e. magnetic drives are much cheaper than flash-based. But, there is one huge flaw – speed. Access time of flash memory is much shorter than in usual hard disc drives. But modern technologies made a huge step in solving this problem.

Scientists of Radbout University Nijmegen made a true marvelous invention. Usually, need a magnet to change the magnetic polarity of a metal. That's how modern hard discs work. But scientists thought of a way to change polarity with laser impulses. Each laser impulse makes the information layer on the disk surface to change its value, from 0 to 1 and vice versa. This invention increased speed of hard disc in about hundred times! But there is one limitation – density of recording is much smaller than that of standard magnetic method. This is because area, which is affected by laser, is about 5 um large. In next 3-4 years scientists hope to reach the 10 nm plank, then these laser-based hard discs can truly compete with magnetic ones.

Samsung Made World's Fastest Graphics Memory

Flash-based memory is developing quite rapidly these days. However, the data access and transfer speed is crucial factor when using flash memory in modern gadgets. With the development of technologies, the speed limit is often exceeded, making possible higher and higher data transfer speeds.

Samsung Company developed what they call a world's fastest memory – GDDR5 (series five, graphics double-data-rate memory). It can transfer data at six gigabits per second, almost 4x faster and consuming 20% less power than GDDR3 chip that you can find on PS3. First microchips that will be announced will feature 512 Mbit density (16Mb x 32), which is capable of transmitting data with an impressive speed - 24 gigabits per second. It is made to be used in GPUs and new-generation consoles (PS4 maybe?); Samsung has already delivered samples of this chip to NVIDIA and ATi. For the Graphics Units the data transfer speed takes a big part in performance, making this chip a good solution to use in top-leveled Graphics cards.

Samsung experts believe that this type of memory will become a standard for top graphics cards, and expect a 50% part of High-End PC Graphics market by 2010. Although we think, according to the development rate of the flash memory speeds, that in the year 2010 will be not only GDDR5 but also GDDR7 or 8 with even higher speeds. There is no limit to this progress, as the graphics evolve we will need more and more powerful GPUs to render it well. So just wait some time, and GDDR6 specs will be even more impressive.

I-SOBOT micro humanoid robot

Nano Sized Bendable Batteries - Future is Near

The biggest problem of all gadgets is battery life. Cell phone or audio player, it becomes completely dead when its battery is depleted. They are less than millimeter thin, and have the structure almost like the old rechargeable batteries do, using zinc-carbon makeup - they are composed of thin layers of zinc and manganese oxide over a layer of nanotubes. They are very thin and small, and because of nanotubes they are bendable too.

Unfortunately, the energy produced by this type of batteries is very small at this level. However, with the current rate of technology development, it will be easy to solve that problem - that's what lead scientist George Gruner says.

In the future, these nano-batteries can be used even for producing a powered T-Shirts or jackets - imagine your clothes, that recharge your gadgets while you are on the go. It is amazing to think that huge and heavy box-like batteries as we know them now will become a thing of the past, making way for a true high-tech thin and bendable ones.

Maglev windmills are 1000x more efficient than usual ones

One of the most critical problems of modern times is search for alternate energy sources. Every day we drain resources from our planet, and it is time to think about situation, when they will be nearly depleted. Of course, we already discovered nearly infinite sources of energy - wind power, water flow, geo-thermal...

Unfortunately, alternate methods of producing energy are not as effective as usual ones, and often require big funds to build generators. However, as technologies develop, we can upgrade existing methods and make them many more effective, like windmills in this case. Using maglev technologies, windmills can be 1000x more efficient because one maglev windmill is able to replace about a 1000 of usual windmills!

Magnet Levitation technology offers almost no friction between moving parts. Blades literally float above the base, which eliminates friction and boosting efficiency hundreds of times! It is capable of scaling to massive sizes, and with a proposed 53M dollars turbine can produce energy to power 750 000 homes - a result that a 1000 of usual windmills offer.

Operational costs are two times smaller than usual which makes new invention a reasonable replacement, taking in consideration that it requires less area too: one maglev windmill at 100 acres versus a thousand of usual ones at 16 000 acres - a huge difference! Maglev turbine can use wind starting from small velocities - from 1.5 meters per second, and can operate with winds exceeding 40 meters per second. Moreover, estimated lifespan is unbelievable - 500 years!

Even if this is probably too good to be true, it is real and Chinese company Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology already invested in maglev turbine building nearly 400 million Yuan. When it will be finished, we will see what the true potential of this new technology is. However, if it will deliver all promised benefits - it can be a step forward to solving energy problem not only for China, but also for all of us.

Jet engine powered by hydrogen

Pollution represents a perennial problem that can not be solved except by means of the collaboration of all the world's nations. During some last decades a great attention was paid to the air pollution and Green House effect. Many people and scientists are unison in opinions that the airline industry is one of the major pollutants at all. So in order to decrease its impact on the environment some drastic measures like using other types of planes should be taken.

According to the recent news a new reaction engine was invented whose designers intend to solve given problem at least partially. This engine is a hydrogen-powered A2 aircraft concept that would be capable of hitting Mach-5 - five times the speed of sound (3400 mph), making it somewhat the spiritual successor of the Concorde. What makes it different is range and efficiency, capable of ferrying up to 300 passengers from Brussels to Sydney in less than four hours. It uses a 2-mode engine that makes it efficient at low speeds as well as hitting top gear with relative ease.

Thus, this concept represents an outstanding attempt to solve such a complicated problem. It would be great if in the near future we were able to see how these ultra-jet planes were put into operation. Yet, there is quite an important point that prevents companies from using extensively these engines: production of hydrogen fuel on a large scale (without emitting carbon dioxide) still remains a significant problem so there will still be danger to our environment.
